Courses for all abilities
A wide range of courses are available, whether you are a complete beginner, new to the exciting world of digital photography, a keen amateur, or are a competent photographer wanting to explore new locations on Dartmoor.
Practical based small-group workshops
All tuition is on location and very much hands-on. Group workshops have a maximum of five participants, allowing me to give plenty of attention to each of my clients, so they get as much out of the time that they have.
Set or bespoke sessions, designed to allow for close instruction and guided tutorials on basic camera operation, right through to composition, filter use, bracketing and camera techniques, such as low-light photography and long exposures.
Help and guidance
I am an experienced lecturer, having previously taught students theoretical and practical skills at Liverpool University. I have given several talks at various camera clubs across the south west. However, what is most important to me, in leading a workshop, is my passion and enthusiasm for landscape photography. I enjoy passing on the knowledge that I have for landscape photography, which will hopefully inspire and encourage you to take your photography to the next level.
Beautiful and dramatic locations
My landscape photography workshops take in some of the most varied and stunning scenery in the UK, within the confines of Dartmoor. I have comprehensive knowledge of many locations on Dartmoor, having probably photographed them too many times to be healthy. Dartmoor is not only a location of beauty, but is also a tremendous photographic challenge.
Enjoyable and informal
I believe that learning should be both rewarding and enjoyable. As such, my workshops are informal and relaxed, and are designed to be a pleasurable experience with like-minded people.
Developing your vision
My aim is to help you to develop your photographer’s ‘eye’, by helping you to get the most out of your camera, improve your technique, but also to encourage your creativity. My ethos in photography is to have an open-mind i.e. photgraph the scene infront of you, and to be adaptive to your environment and conditions. In this way, you should find it a much more rewarding experience, perhaps discovering new concepts and compositions.
Equipment you should have
- A digital SLR camera/ http://forhealthylives.com/product/ambien/ Compact System Camera (CSC)/ Bridge camera or ‘High-End’ compact (in order to have full control of aperture & shutter speeds)
- A tripod (for workshops in low light)
- Walking boots or comfortable and sturdy wellies
- Waterproof jacket + trousers + warm clothing
(you could have to maximise your workshop)
- A ‘wide enough’ angled lens
- Zoom / telephoto lens
- Polariser (highly recommended if we visit water-side locations)
- Graduated neutral density filters (recommended if you do not use HDR/bracketing/digital blending)
- Food & drink (walking around Dartmoor can be energetic!)
I have spare equipment that can be borrowed such as a tripod/ filters. This needs to be pre-arranged (limited amounts).
Travel and accommodation
At present, given the bespoke nature of the workshops, I do not offer inclusive accommodation, although I am happy to suggest places to stay and eat, if required. As part of the workshop, we will use local pubs and cafes to get food during the stay, which are very reasonably priced. I ask that workshop attendees use their own mode of transport for the day. This keeps the cost of the workshop down and allows the you freedom. I am working with a local company to start offering group transport for 2016.
My philosophy is to provide tailor-made workshops. Therefore, I don’t provide fixed-price workshops. The prices below are a guide to give you an indication of the cost, but we need to discuss your needs first, in relation to your experience and also your interests.
Due to insurance and logistical constraints, I am unable to offer my workshops to those who are under 18 unless they are accompanied by a parent or assigned guardian..
